What is art?
Art is a human created phenomenon which did arise in
the 18 century. During the past 250 years this phenomenon has been subject
to a continuously change. Whatever is defined as art today may not been
defined as art in an earlier time. Leonardo daVinci did not consider himself
as an artist. Besides being an inventor, scientist, civil and military
engineer, - and a philosopher, he was an architect, sculptor and painter,
-crafts at that time! Today no one doubts his artificial authenticity,
and we consider him as one of the great masters of art. To put it another
way; -what may not have been defined as art in the past may be defined
as art in the future! Today the thinking about art is based on
the relations to the artist, the artwork, the observer and the reality.
In the process of communication about art, these relations are the basis
for the main theories of art: the imitation theories, the expression theories,
the reception theories and the formalistic theories. These four common
theories are also the origin for all the art movements ("isms")
which are the concepts of art. However, this FAQ deals with problems and
questions connected to the use of the web site artonline4u.com. If you

I am not an art expert, can I make a comment?
YES - indeed! Art is a subjective theme, no further discussion about
that!
I am not clever to practice the English language,
should I make comments?
YES - absolutely! Art online for you is not an exclusive club
for English speaking people, or a contest in how to write English. You
may sometime find it a bit funny when a foreigner is talking your own
native language. You may pick-up new phrases and expand your glossary.
Besides, did you know that when common people from Scandinavian, Germany,
Holland, Belgium or other countries in the region, are talking to each
other in English, they understand each other much better than when they
are talking with people from England, USA and other English talking countries.
It is natural.
Can I write anything I want?
Well, it is no point in commenting the weather outside today, is it?
- Use common sense. The jargon of the Community is meant to be relaxed
and maybe with a little sense of humour, -if you like.
You will also be able to include emoticons into your comments.
Note: Any improper comments will be deleted by the webmaster, and a notice
will be sent to the addresser. Repeated abuse of this service will result
in cancellation of the membership in artonline4u.

in the comment field.

which is the artists gallery.
- Step3: You find the artists' "online gallery" link in the link bar, below
the folder links. Pick this link, and you are into the artists' online
gallery. You can now start to explore the art objects.
How does the "geographical" art index work?
You can find artist, galleries or exhibitions from a specific geographical

index is located in the ARTISTS, GALLERIES and EXHIBITION folder.

How does the artists index "topic" view work?
You can find specific genre of art by using the topic view of the artist
index list. You are also allowed to combine different topics, but you
should moderate this to maximum 3 topics.
- Step1: Select the topics you are interested in, by marking the box to
the left of the topic.
- Step2: Press the "Show Artists" button, down at the right side of the
page. You will now be directed to a temporary list, where your selected
topics are listed. If the list is correct, go to next step. If not, return
by using the "back" link.
- Step3: Press the "Show Artists" button. An artist index list grouped
by the selected topics, will now be displayed. Choose the artist you want
to explore.
How does the artist index "Artwork" view work?
If you are looking for an art object with a specific title, then the
artwork view of the artist index becomes very handy (e.g. you are looking
for a landscape painting). Use the letter links on the page, and select
the first letter in the name of the title of the object you are looking
for. Start then browsing through the list, and make use of the turn over
link if necessary.
Note: Common words and articles as "A" and "The" are generally filtered
away. E.g. an art object has the title "The Evening". You should than
start looking in the "E" letter link. If you do not find it here, go to
"T" and check it out. (In some occasions the filter is not used.
What is an artist's profile?
Once you have picked an artist in the artist index list, you will enter
this artist's profile (pages). You may consider this as the artist site
in the site. You will find the headings in the menu bar below the main
folder links, see illustration in next question. The headings in the artists'
profile will vary from artist to artist. But all artists' profile has
one common heading; the online gallery. This is where
the art objects are located.
Note: You will see the name of the artist to the left in the menu bar,
this also function as a link. So, as long as you are in to an artist's
profile, this link will direct you to the start of his profile (home).
How do I navigate in an artist's online gallery?
Once you are into an artist's art online gallery, you can browse through
the artist's work by using the slide show. Pictures of the art objects
should now be displayed between the two arrows in the slide show. Hold
your mouse over the specific arrow direction you want the slides to go
(if the slide show is not working, have a look at the two next question
before you continue reading this.) An art object can be displayed in three
different sizes in the artist's online gallery (S, M & L). The small
sized pictures of the art objects in the slide show will be displayed
with a thumbnail.
- Step1: Press an object you want to explore. The art object will now be
displayed to the left, with a medium sized picture of the object. See
illustration below.

price, year, material) below the medium sized picture there is four buttons:
ZOOM, ADD TO ALBUM, Make COMMENT and View COMMENT.
Note: In some occasions, there is a link called " Associated
Gallery " below the information. The " Associated Gallery " link directs
you to a gallery (galleries) which is selling this object. More about
buying art objects in "How can I buy an art object I see
in artonline4u?"
- Step2: If you want a more detailed look at the art object you press the
ZOOM button, or press the medium sized picture. A new window opens up,
as a pop up window, with a large picture of the object. Information about
the art object is located in the bottom of the page.
Note: In the bottom to the right in the pop up window, there is two arrow
links, which allows you to see "next" or "previous" object. This is very
handy to use, when you are exploring an artist's art objects, and you
do not have to go back to the other window while you are exploring the
objects.
Note: The Ref No, is the reference number for this
art object. For any inquiry regarding a specific art object, you should
use this number.
Why is the slide show in the artists' online gallery
not working?
Not all internet browsers can handle the java script in the slide show.
Above the slide show, to the right side, there is an alternative
link. Use this. When the pictures are displayed, you can try to press
the online gallery link again, and the slide
show may start to work correctly. If not, continue to use the alternative
link.
What is the alternative link in the artist's
online gallery?
The "alternative link" in an online gallery is just another way to view
the art objects in an artist's online gallery. By time, you will discover
this link as very handy and a rapid way to browse through the art objects
in the online gallery. When you are using the alternative link, the pictures
of the art objects will be displayed in a table.
