What is art?

Art is a human created phenomenon which did arise in the 18 century. During the past 250 years this phenomenon has been subject to a continuously change. Whatever is defined as art today may not been defined as art in an earlier time. Leonardo daVinci did not consider himself as an artist. Besides being an inventor, scientist, civil and military engineer, - and a philosopher, he was an architect, sculptor and painter, -crafts at that time! Today no one doubts his artificial authenticity, and we consider him as one of the great masters of art. To put it another way; -what may not have been defined as art in the past may be defined as art in the future! Today the thinking about art is based on the relations to the artist, the artwork, the observer and the reality. In the process of communication about art, these relations are the basis for the main theories of art: the imitation theories, the expression theories, the reception theories and the formalistic theories. These four common theories are also the origin for all the art movements ("isms") which are the concepts of art. What are the numbers of the object size (measurement) telling me?

If a vase is sized by the numbers 80 x dia 30, it means that the dimensions of the vase are 80 cm height, and the larges diameter is 30 cm.

Is the frame following the painting?

There is no generally rule about this. Most of the paintings are not provided with frame. Frame is something you should provide after you have bought the painting, and should be adapted so it matches both the painting and the location. Some paintings are framed with a "special" frame, and than maybe an expensive one. In these cases you should check out if the frame is included in the price of the painting. When a watercolour painting is pictured with framed cardboard, the cardboard is included in the price.
