Henri Matisse began to work and test the idea of cut-out silhouettes from paper in 1920. This idea was original initialized by Picasso and the Cubists, the Futurists, the Russian Constructivists, the Surrealists and the Dadaists. However, in contrast to how the other used cut outs from printed material as newspaper and photos, which resulted in new meanings caused by the context, Matisse painted the cut-outs with tempera himself. He returned to this idea several times during his lifetime. During the 1930's he created several front covers for magazines. Than in an age of more than 80 years, he returned to the idea again, and created the Blue Nude IV in 1952.
