Alfred Sisley - Art GalleryAlfred Sisley was born on the 30'Th of October 1839, in Paris. He was brought up in an English business family resided in France. In 1857 he was sent to London to learn about commercial trading. During his stay he often visited the galleries in London. Those visits were the nutriment for Alfred's love to the painting. He found peculiar interest for the paintings of Constable, Bonington and especially paintings of William Turner. Sisley completed his studies in London and returned to Paris in 1861, firmly decided to become a painter. The following year, released from his obligations - though financial supported by his father, he started to work in the atelier of the Swiss artist Charles Gleyre. Here he met and became acquainted with some other young artists as Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Fredric Bazille, a friendship which in the near future should turn into one of the greatest eras in the history of art. Although Gleyre's atelier was closed down in 1864, the four artists
continued to paint together by practicing open air painting in the
woods of Fontaineblau, and they were often gathered in Bazille's atelier.
In the mid 1860's the writer and reviewer, Emile Zola,
was paying attention to the artist group, and he linked relations
between the group and other artists as Edouard
Manet. Alfred Sisley was humorous and loyal of nature. However,
he was also a rather private person, preferring quit company with
his wife, Marie Lesouezec, instead of the rather loudly circles of
Edouard Manet. | ||

Alfred Sisley died on the 29'Th of January 1899, after being suffering for 4 years of throat cancer. In his lifetime he never achieved respects outside the inner art cycle of the French Impressionism movement. Vincent van Gogh described Alfred Sisley as the most discrete of the Impressionists. Perhaps because of his nature, Alfred Sisley was the one of the Impressionists who showed most loyalty to the boundaries of the Impressionistic landscape painting. As Cristopher Lloyd as well writes in the book; "The Impressionistic Revolution": "Alfred Sisley never abandoned the Impressionism, the Impressionism abandoned him!" |
