Edouard Manet - Art GalleryEdouard Manet was born in Paris on the 23'rd of January 1832. He was raised in a prominent family. His father was a civil servant and magistrate, his mother a daughter of a diplomat. In their opinion Edouard was going to study laws, and defiantly not art. In protest to this, Edouard as a teen age went to sea. However, in 1850 Manet started six years of study in Thomas Couture's atelier combined with evening classes at the Academie Suisse. In 1856 he started on a long travel in Europe, studying the art of the Grand Masters. He found special interests to Velasquez and Goya, and later he was also inspired by art of Coubet. Manet's early works are much about everyday subjects and portraitures. In 1862 his father dies, leaving Manet a fortune, which makes him financial independent and secure. He starts to develop a new technique, a new form of pictorial presentation. Continous! |

As Manet now was taking part in exhibitions he was criticized for being rebellious and bohemian. In the mid 60's he meets, and gets closed befriended to, the writer Emile Zola, who defended and praised the art of Manet. Zola leads Manet to join a group of young French artists, the impressionistic painters; Edgar Degas, Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Alfred Sisley and Paul Cezanne, who admired and were influenced by the art of Edouard Manet. Although he in turn was influenced by them, the influence was more or less limited to the use of light colors and the effects of light and he never adapted the full Impressionist methods. Edouard Manet died in Paris on the 30'Th of April 1883. He is to be considered as an originator of modern painting, and an important impressionist.
