Mary Cassatt - Art Gallery

Mary Cassatt was born the 22'nd of May in 1844, in the city Allegheny in Pennsylvania, USA. In a young age she started to travel in Europe, and finally she settled down in Paris in 1874, - in the beginning of the "Great Decade of Impressionism" (1872-1883). Here she got acquainted to Edgar Degas, whose ideas influenced on Cassatt's works a lot. Mary Cassatt, as other masters of the impressionism as Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Camille Pissaro, Berthe Morisot and Edouard Manet, took part in many exhibitions at the Salon in the late 1870's and the first half of the 1880's.
Themes in many of her paintings are about women and often woman with child (ren). For many years she submitted her works to exhibitions in America, without achieving any appreciable notices. However, she finally broke through and received acknowledge and attention as she in 1893 painted the mural; "The Modern Woman" in connection to the World Exposition in Chicago. Mary Cassatt died the 14'Th of June 1926 in Chateau de Beaufresne, outside Paris.
